You can apply for ACA Marketplace health insurance through HealthCare.gov or your state’s Marketplace. Check when you can enroll, complete an application to learn your eligibility and savings, compare available plans, and pay the first premium if one is due. OEP Navigator can help you understand the process and request a call from Quote Variety.
1. Check when you can enroll.
For 2027 coverage on HealthCare.gov, Open Enrollment runs November 1, 2026–January 15, 2027. Enroll by December 15 for a January 1 start. Enrolling December 16–January 15 generally means a February 1 start. State-run Marketplaces can have different deadlines; our enrollment dates guide links to the official state directory.
If you need coverage before 2027 or outside Open Enrollment, check whether you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. Losing qualifying coverage, marriage, a new baby, and certain moves can create an enrollment opportunity. Deadlines and proof requirements depend on the event. Voluntarily dropping coverage does not automatically qualify you. Check the event-specific rules.
You can also apply for Medicaid or CHIP throughout the year if eligible.
2. Choose how to apply.
Start at HealthCare.gov, which can direct you to your state’s Marketplace. Official options include applying online, by phone, with local assistance, through an approved enrollment partner, or by paper application. See the official ways to apply.
OEP Navigator is an independent information and referral website. You can read our guides or request a call from Quote Variety about health insurance. Our contact form is not a Marketplace application and does not enroll you in a plan. “Navigator” is our brand name; we are not a government-certified Marketplace Navigator.
Generally, you must live in the United States, be a U.S. citizen or national or a lawfully present noncitizen, and not be incarcerated. People with Medicare cannot enroll in a Marketplace plan. Eligibility to buy coverage and eligibility for financial help are separate questions. Review Marketplace eligibility.
3. Gather your household and coverage information.
Before completing an official application, have your household details, expected income for the coverage year, and information about any employer coverage offers ready. If you are applying for 2027, estimate 2027 income. Last year’s income can be a starting point, but update it for expected changes.
If you work for yourself, have seasonal hours, or earn commissions, base your estimate on your records and expected changes. Report updates to the Marketplace when income or household circumstances change. Learn how to estimate income.
Keep a separate list of your doctors, preferred hospitals, and prescriptions for plan comparison. Send application documents only through the official application process or other authorized channel—not through OEP Navigator’s callback form.
4. Compare the cost of having—and using—the plan.
Start with the monthly premium after any savings you qualify for. Then compare the deductible, copays, coinsurance, and annual out-of-pocket limit. A lower premium may come with higher costs when you receive care.
Check your doctors in the provider directory and prescriptions in the covered-drug list. Review the Summary of Benefits and Coverage for each plan. Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum describe how costs are shared; those labels are not quality-of-care rankings. See the official plan comparison guide.
If you qualify for income-based cost-sharing reductions, a Silver plan is needed to receive those extra savings. Learn more in our 2027 eligibility and savings guide.
5. Confirm your enrollment and coverage start date.
After selecting a plan, follow the insurer’s payment instructions. Pay your first premium if one is due; selecting a plan alone does not finish this step. Check your confirmation, effective date, and any requests for documents. Review the Marketplace’s enrollment overview.
Is ACA insurance the same as “Obamacare”?
“Obamacare” is a common name for the Affordable Care Act. When shopping, ask whether a policy is an ACA-compliant major medical plan and whether it is offered through the Marketplace. Marketplace plans cover essential health benefits and pre-existing conditions. A product advertised as health coverage should not be assumed to have those protections.
Do I have to use a private website to apply?
No. You can apply directly through the official Marketplace. OEP Navigator offers education and an optional callback from Quote Variety if you want help with your next step.
